Okay, let’s dive right in. We’re starting today with, well, arguably the highest stakes topic possible: humanity’s survival.

It really is. You know, back in 1945, right after the Manhattan Project, Andrew Galambos pointed out something he called the critical juncture.

Right. The critical juncture. That was when we as a species developed the physical science of nuclear weapons to literally destroy ourselves.

Exactly. But, and this is the terrifying part, we completely lack the social science needed to stop ourselves from using that power. We had the bomb, but not the wisdom.

And looking around now, I mean, that crisis hasn’t gone away, has it?

Absolutely not. It persists. We’ve got what, over 12,000 nuclear warheads scattered across the globe. Enough to wipe out civilization many, many times over.

So, we’re still stuck in that intellectual no man’s land.

Pretty much, we haven’t developed that robust social science needed to get past the threat to evolve beyond what the source material calls political barbarism. It sounds dramatic. But maybe it’s accurate.

So our mission today really is to unpack the framework designed to tackle this head-on, the science of volition.

The sources we’re looking at argue this isn’t just abstract theory. It’s presented as a potentially revolutionary approach to organizing society, something that could guide us towards cosmic civilization, or Spaceland, as they call it.

Yeah, Spaceland. It’s about providing a realistic path for long-term survival and progress, not just muddling through. And to get there, we need to understand its core structure. Right.

Absolutely. We need to cover the uh the fundamental building blocks. So it’s two main postulates and then what they call the big three concepts. Property markets and noncoercion. The analysis suggests this is basically the only viable map out of potential collapse.

Okay. Let’s start with the stakes. The sheer gravity of it all. It’s easy to forget, but Carl Sagan nailed it. “Extinction is the rule. Survival is the exception.”

And that’s not just philosophy. It’s grounded in physics. Really thermodynamics. Well, the crisis is real. It’s happening now. The sources argue that sticking with our current political and social models makes self-destruction almost well, statistically likely over the long run. It connects back to the second law of thermodynamic entropy.

Ah, right. Everything tends towards disorder, chaos.

Exactly. Energy flows towards disorder. Life itself and civilization as an extension of life only exist because they’re constantly fighting that decay. It takes continuous effort to create and maintain a border against these, you know, fundamentally destructive forces. It’s an ongoing battle.

So, if the universe is fundamentally tilted towards decay, what’s our best weapon against that? Our anti-entropy tool.

Cooperation. Simple as that. But specifically, voluntary noncoercive cooperation.

Why noncoercive?

Because that’s the catalyst allowing humans to build complex institutions, generate wealth, and create the kind of systemic order that can actually resist entropy effectively. Civilization, viewed this way, is just the result of successful large-scale voluntary cooperation.

Okay, let’s get into the science itself then. Volitional science. It claims a kind of deductive rigor like physics or geometry.

Yeah, that’s the claim. Just like geometry rests on axioms, or Einstein’s theories, on basic assumptions. This social science is built on two fundamental postulates about human behavior.

All right. Postulate one.

Postulate one defines why we do anything. It’s volitional beings that act to pursue greater happiness.

Okay. But happiness can mean a lot of things. How is it defined here?

Very precisely, it’s not just feeling good. It’s defined as the integrated totality of a person’s subjective preferences at any given moment. Basically, the sum total of everything you value.

So, every action, from grabbing coffee to launching a rocket, stems from dissatisfaction. You’re not perfectly happy with your current state, so you act volitionally. You choose to pursue a state you believe will be more satisfactory. This is presented as a universal law of human action.

Okay, that defines the motivation. What about the morality of the actions?

That leads us straight to postulate two, the morality postulate. And it’s a big one. All pursuits of happiness that do not involve coercion are equally valid.

Equally valid. That sounds challenging for society. I mean, why all noncoercive actions, even ones that seem silly or maybe unproductive right now?

Because fundamentally, we can’t predict the future. We have absolutely no way of knowing the long-term impact of any voluntary action taken today.

Like a seemingly useless invention that turns out to be revolutionary later.

Exactly. History is full of them. Things that seemed odd or trivial at the time become cornerstones of progress. So any attempt by society to restrict noncoercive actions, even small ones, is basically an attempt to censor the future, to suppress knowledge the system might desperately need later on to adapt and survive.

So that openness, that freedom for any non-damaging action, is what fuels innovation.

Precisely. And innovation is presented as absolutely critical for long-term survival against entropy and unforeseen challenges.

That’s a huge difference from physics, isn’t it? Physics looks for predictable, unchanging relationships, right? Social systems are different. They emerge from countless individual choices, and the outcomes are never certain. You can’t predict them like clockwork.

So what’s the point of the science then if you can’t predict?

It’s not about prediction. It’s about setting the right constraints. By understanding these natural laws of volition and strictly applying noncoercive rules, setting the boundaries, we can prevent the most disastrous societal outcomes. We focus on structuring the system so it’s resilient to the unpredictable.

Okay, this seems like a good point to bring in the big three. This is where volitional science really diverges from mainstream thinking. Starting with property.

Yes, property is foundational, absolutely central. And the definition here is very specific, maybe even radical. Property is defined as anything created by a volitional being, anything that wouldn’t exist otherwise.

Create, so like a chair or a song, but not land or oil.

Exactly. Natural resources that existed before human action aren’t property in this primary sense. The definition is strict. It has to be a product of creation.

Okay, that’s a sharp definition. What does that imply about ownership?

It implies the creator has the exclusive right to control the use of what they created. And this property gets broken down into three key types. P0, P1, and P2.

Let’s break those down. P0, primordial property. That’s your own body, your physical self. It’s the fundamental starting point of self-awareness, consciousness, and your ability to act and control anything at all.

Makes sense. Then, P1, this seems important.

Hugely important. Primary property P1 is the realm of intangible derivatives. Your mind, your beliefs, your ideas, inventions, software code, music, stories, the intellectual stuff.

Exactly. And the sources are emphatic. P1 is by far the most significant type of property humans create. It’s the engine of all progress, all efficiency gains, all wealth generation, everything truly new starts as P1.

And following that logic, secondary property, PI 2 must be the tangible derivatives, the physical things that are created based on P1 ideas. So the smartphone in your hand, the table it’s on, the car you drive, financial assets like stocks derived from company ideas, these are all P2.

So protecting P1, the ideas, is paramount for survival and growth.

Absolutely vital. If you can’t reliably protect and control your ideas, you essentially cripple the engine of progress before it even gets started. Why innovate if the fruits of your mental labor can just be taken?

This connects directly to the second pillar, doesn’t it? Markets. How are markets viewed here? Not just as an economic system, right?

Not at all. Markets are seen as a natural evolutionary social order, something that emerges spontaneously when people interact voluntarily and noncoercively.

So, not created by governments.

No, they arise naturally. They’re described as the nursery of progress. The core reason markets are seen as superior for stable long-term growth is that every transaction is, by definition, win-win.

Win-win. How so?

Because it’s voluntary. Both the buyer and the seller must believe they are better off making the exchange; otherwise, they simply wouldn’t do it. Value, real subjective value, is revealed through these free exchanges.

Okay. If markets are fundamentally win-win, what does that make political systems, which often allocate resources, fundamentally win-lose? According to this framework, political systems rely on coercion, on force. Think about taxes, regulations, and subsidies. They inherently involve taking resources from person A against their will, perhaps to give to person B or fund project C.

So markets discover value through voluntary choice.

Yes, they’re noncoercive discovery engines. They thrive on information revealed by choices. Political coercion, on the other hand, actively suppresses that information by forcing actions that wouldn’t happen voluntarily.

Which brings us neatly to the final pillar, the ultimate constraint. Noncoercion, right? And coercion has a very clear definition here. Any attempted interference with another person’s property without their explicit permission. This includes direct physical force, but also fraud, which is like formational force.

Any attempted interference, that’s bad.

It is. The whole moral system boils down to one fundamental rule described as absolute morality. Never interfere with an owner’s control of his property without his consent. It’s essentially the golden rule applied rigorously to property rights.

Okay, but that any interference seems incredibly strict. What about things we usually think require some level of collective compliance, like roads or basic infrastructure? How do those get built without taxes, which are coercive under this definition?

That’s a critical question, and the framework’s answer is bold. It suggests that if something like a road network is genuinely valuable to people, a noncoercive market-based solution will always emerge. Think toll roads, private road associations, subscription models.

So the argument is that if you need coercion, it means the thing isn’t actually valuable enough for people to support voluntarily, or you haven’t found the right market mechanism yet.

Exactly. The perceived need for coercion is seen as a signal of a flaw in the current approach or valuation, not as a fundamental requirement for civilization. A truly valuable service will find voluntary funding.

So freedom then isn’t really a political term here.

Not in the usual sense. Freedom is simply the objective condition where an individual has 100% control over their property, their body, P0, their ideas, P1, and their tangible creations, P2. Full stop.

And the consequence of violating that, the result of coercion.

It’s seen as the ultimate destroyer of civilizations. When you coerce someone, you force them to act against their own judgment and preferences. This action destroys information, the information about what they would have done voluntarily.

You lose that data point.

Precisely. The system loses crucial feedback. That suppression of knowledge, that blinding of the system to reality, prevents learning from mistakes and the sources argue inevitably leads to societal decay and failure. Coercion makes society stupider, essentially.

Okay, so this framework sounds theoretically coherent, maybe even compelling. But how does it stack up against reality? Is there real-world evidence?

Well, the sources point strongly to evidence from the 20th century. There are almost unintentional large-scale social experiments.

You mean Orwellian experiments?

Yes, exactly. Tragic circumstances, but incredibly revealing. You had situations where people from the exact same culture, same background, same history were split by arbitrary political lines into vastly different systems. One side embraced more market principles and property rights. The other side imposed highly coercive socialism, right? Like West versus East Germany.

That’s the classic example, but also Hong Kong versus mainland China, especially before recent changes. And South Korea versus North Korea.

And the results are unequivocal according to the data presented. In every single case, the societies that allowed more economic freedom, protected private property more effectively, and used less coercion, the more capitalist ones, vastly outperformed the socialist ones. Not just in wealth, but in health, innovation, and quality of life. Almost every measurable metric.

The images of West and East Berlin side by side were stark.

Incredibly stark. West Berlin, vibrant, colorful, rebuilt, technologically advancing. East Berlin, just meters away, gray, stagnant, economically depressed. Same people, same starting point, but radically different outcomes based purely on the social system imposed.

So if history shows noncoercive markets work better, how do we apply that lesson to one of the trickiest areas? Protecting and rewarding primary property P1 ideas, innovations, the things that are so easily copied or dismissed, especially for the originator, the innovator.

This is a huge focus.

Yeah.

The argument is that our current systems, like state-run patents and copyrights, are fundamentally flawed and often counterproductive. They are coercive and temporary.

So what’s the alternative? How should innovators be compensated?

The compensation should be seen as an expression of gratitude. That’s the word used. It’s the market’s way of acknowledging the value received from the innovation. And critically, this gratitude, this compensation shouldn’t just vanish when the inventor dies.

Why not? Their work is done.

But their P1 property, their idea, their discovery often continues to generate immense value for society, sometimes for centuries. Think Newton’s law. We still use them every single day. That value flow shouldn’t just stop.

Okay. So, how do you manage that perpetually? This leads to the concept of a Netco.

Yes. The natural estate trust company, Netco. It’s proposed as a new kind of financial and legal structure.

How would it work?

An innovator like Isaac Newton, if he’d had this option, would establish a Netco. This entity would hold the perpetual property rights to their P1 creations, his laws of motion, calculus, optics, perpetually. So, forever.

In principle, yes. As long as the property generates value, so if a 21st-century engineer uses Newtonian mechanics to design a better jet engine, which they absolutely do, then a small pre-agreed, nonzero royalty or license fee would flow back to the Newton Netco.

Wow. So Newton’s estate would be astronomical by now, unimaginably vast. And here’s the key: that accumulated capital wouldn’t just sit there or go to distant heirs fighting over furniture. It would be perpetually reinvested by the Netco.

Reinvested in what?

According to the trust’s mandate, it would fund new fundamental research, scientific advancement, maybe education, or even ambitious projects like space exploration. It turns past genius into a perpetual engine for future progress.

That’s a fundamental shift. It sounds like the bridge from what the sources call Flatland, which is our current world, coercive, politically dominated, kind of stuck, to Spaceland, a truly advanced space-faring civilization built on innovation and noncoercion. How does that transition play out in say how businesses are structured?

It requires a radical rethink led by new entrepreneurial ventures. They would need to adopt internal structures that minimize coercion as much as possible. The most critical shift identified is moving away from the traditional employer-employee model.

Why is that model seen as coercive?

Because it often treats labor as just another input cost to be minimized rather than as a contributing partner who created value. Wages are often set by hierarchical power dynamics rather than direct contribution to revenue.

So what’s the volitional science alternative?

Contractual partnerships based on revenue shares. Everyone involved in creating value for the venture, from the person with the initial idea to the engineer, the marketer, and the technician, gets a pre-agreed share of the actual revenue generated.

Not just a fixed wage.

Right. A share proportional to their contribution as agreed upon freely. This aligns everyone’s interest directly with the success of the venture. It maximizes cooperation and dramatically reduces the internal conflict and coercion inherent in the old top-down model. Everyone wins when the venture wins.

You know, the sources make a stark point near the end. They say our current political and economic systems show characteristics that have always preceded social collapse. That’s sobering.

It is. And volitional science is presented as the alternative, the road map away from that collapse, away from that potential civilizational dead end.

So the argument is that survival, let alone expansion into space, fundamentally depends on adopting these noncoercive market principles and truly protecting P1 the intellectual property.

That’s the core assertion that these are the only kinds of social structures capable of generating the kind of unlimited, durable growth and innovation needed to overcome existential threats and become a multiplanetary, perhaps even interstellar species. We have to evolve beyond political conflict and economic coercion to make it.

Okay, let’s wrap up with a final thought. The entire foundation here rests on the idea that any truly advanced, long-living civilization must have figured out how to be fundamentally noncoercive. If they hadn’t, they’d likely have destroyed themselves. Right?

That’s the logical conclusion within this framework. Yes. Self-destruction via misuse of technology seems almost inevitable for coercive societies over cosmic time scales.

So, if that core idea holds, if advanced intelligence requires noncoercion for long-term survival, then we can leave you with this rather provocative idea to think about.

There will probably never be an interstellar war. Why? Because any civilization capable of crossing the vast distances between stars would, by necessity, have already solved the problem of internal coercion. They would have outgrown it to survive.

And they’d understand basic economics like Ricardo’s Law of Association.

Exactly. They’d instantly recognize that peaceful trade, specialization, voluntary exchange across star systems, well, that would always be vastly more profitable and beneficial than engaging in costly, destructive conflict. There’s just no percentage in interstellar war for a truly advanced rational species.

So if we ever do make contact,

the interaction, according to this view, is likely to be inherently peaceful based on mutual benefit and essentially market principles, trade, not war.
